Places & Creature Comforts...

Where the Pioneer Trails (the Oregon, Mormon and Pony Express) can still to be seen, one stands in awe when viewing  the rugged terrain over which 350,000 emigrants crossed between 1841 and 1866 (including some of our ancestors on their way to the Willamette Valley).

On the distant horizon, Continental Peak and Oregon Buttes rise up as familiar landmarks, just as they did for the hardy souls who traveled across this "High Plains Desert."

Sites to Visit & things to do!

South Pass City WY State Historical Park

In December 1869, Wyoming became the first territory or state to allow women the right to vote and hold office.  In more recent years, the once dilapidated buildings have been restored and most are open to the public.  Entrance to the park is by donation.  Be sure to stop in at the South Pass General Store (located inside the park) - you'll be delighted at the variety of items available for purchase!

Carissa Gold Mine

When the Carissa mine began producing gold in 1867, a rush to the South Pass area began and South Pass City was founded.  The Carissa Mine buildings can still be seen today.

Willie's Handcart Site

Grave site of some of the members of the Mormon Handcart Company who froze to death in November, 1856. This site is publicly accessible and maintained by the LDS Church which has established a small memorial park and rest area. Trail ruts are clearly visible coming over the small hill.
